A sentimental journey through Minas Gerais

Governor Aécio Neves

Joining his passion for Minas Gerais to a complete mastery of the art of photography, Marcio de Lima Carvalho has already recorded in two books Historical Cities of Minas Gerais and Living Belo Horizonte some of the most beautiul and significant historical sites, landscapes, and cultural monuments of our state.

Furthermore, in recent years, this tireless promoter of the beauty and traditions of Minas, has already showed his best works in photography in Lisbon, Madrid, and Washington, taking to the Europeans and North Americans, pictures that imply an irrecusable invitation to know Minas Gerais.

Now, with the book Focus in Minas, Márcio de Carvalho opens his lens even more to present to the readers both the modernity of Belo Horizonte and the scenery of Caraça, the religiosity of Ouro Preto, Mariana, Congonhas and São João Del Rey, but also the aspects of our territory little known even by mineiros from other regions.

The photographer searched for pictures of the Congado in Itaúna, the waterfalls in Triângulo and Serra da Canastra, the huge dam in Furnas, and the wonderful Vesperata in Diamantina, that goes along with Lagoa Santa and Cordisburgo caverns, an extraordinary, natural and artitisc collection of Inhotim, in Brumadinho, the forests of Monte Verde and the hidromineral spas in Caxambu, São Lourenço, Araxá and Lambari.

Marcio de Carvalhos latest book together with the texts of Airton Guimarães and the poems of Cristina de Freitas, is a sensitive journey that draws the reader in our major tourist attractions and, at the same time, the collection of works of our best photography.

Since my youth, Ive been passing by all the paths of Minas Gerais, and Ive been to all the regions. Yet, this book of Marcio de Carvalho has provided me the good moments of memories and the chance to see the masterpices of Baroque again, with the exuberant natural beauty of our rivers, mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and forest regions, with our new economical and social reality and, most of all, with the admiration for the warmth of our people, that love their culture and preserve the best of our land.

For the mineiros who are far, this is a way to attenuate their feeling homesick.

For the Brazilians in general, it will be a living, colorful and poetic journey through the territory that is an authentic synthesis of the geography, economy, culture, and Brazilian society.

And, for those who will come from very far, and speak other languages, it will be like a mandatory itinerary of a journey made up within happiness, as stated by Guimarães Rosa.

As the major part of the economical and political Brazilian history was written in Minas Gerais, and by mineiros, the travelers of this 21st century will have here the chance to understand Brazil and Brazilians better, to appreciate our art and cookery and take back to their countries the image of this part of the Brazilian territory that has advanced and modernized without leaving the roots and traditions behind.

I hope that each mineiro reader may also become a promoter of the Minas in Focus, so that thousands of Brazilians and foreign people can also discover Minas, whose paths were born in the past and lead us into the future.
